Forms that work: Designing web forms for usability

Dealing with complex forms

If you have a long, complicated form then here are some things that you can do to help users through it:

  1. Find out which parts of it are truly necessary. Can you simplify it at all, or perhaps delay some parts of it until later in the relationship?
  2. Try to arrange the fields into groups. Janko at Speedwarp has some ideas for patterns to help with complex forms.
  3. Use a progress indicator or summary menu to help users keep track of where they are going in the form.

Caroline is working on a presentation for UPA 2010 on complex forms: she'll post some more ideas here when that is done.

Hi Michele

Due to surgery, I wasn't able to go to UPA 2009. I resubmitted the presentation for UPA 2010 and it has been accepted, so I will be presenting it then.

DId Caroline present this at UPA 2009? If so, do you have a link to the presentation?
